The month of March, that’s what! I cannot believe that March is almost over already. By the end of April, we will see some changes around us. I alluded to good news in my last post — my daughter and her two children, Trinity and Ethan, will be moving to Kelowna! Kristen has been job hunting in our area and John has been house hunting on her behalf. By this time next month, they’ll be here and I am thrilled that I’ll get to have grandchildren around.
In other things… Though I haven’t been doing much knitting, I have been doing other things. Through my job, I’ve acquired a bunch of 28 lb. writing paper, particularly nice when you write with a fountain pen. However, four reams of paper is a lot of paper!
I decided to make myself a small journal/notebook with some of that wealth of paper.
I used a piece of leather I’ve had laying around for a long time (more than 10 years!); it came from a pair of Danier leather pants, buttery soft. I snagged the pants on a display in a grocery store shortly after I’d purchased them and the store graciously paid to have the pants repaired. When I picked up the repaired pants, I was also given the piece they replaced. I’ve been wanting to do something with it ever since but couldn’t decide just what. This is the perfect thing.
The journal is comprised of five signatures, each made up of six sheets of 8.5 x 11″ paper folded in half. I used hemp cord to stitch the signatures together and used a heavier hemp cord to make the wraparound tie. I found a brass button in my bag o’ buttons to finish it all off.
There’s only one thing wrong with a journal like this — I always find it difficult to know what to write in it. Putting pen to paper that first time in a handmade journal… I just don’t know… Am I alone in this?
I’ve also made a few simple notebooks, 12 sheets of paper folded in half, with a card stock cover, hand stitched, with book binder’s tape to cover the stitching on the spine. I’m already using a notebook I made before and love it.
Yesterday I made something that I just have to share with you. It was that good! I don’t always post the results of my recipe experimentation here (that’s what my cooking blog… sorely neglected… is for) but this recipe is really yummy!
This is Toasted Coconut Panna Cotta with Hibiscus and Raspberry Gelee. If you’ve never had panna cotta before, it can be described as milk jell-o. The recipe arrived in my inbox this week and, after reading through it, I decided I absolutely had to try it this weekend.
The recipe is from Serious Eats, one of my favourite food websites; I think I can honestly say that none of the recipes we’ve tried from that site has failed. I had to change the recipe slightly; it calls for pomegranate, not raspberries, and I couldn’t find a single pomegranate in either of the two markets I went to. I assume it’s because they’re not in season at the moment. I don’t think it matters; I love the hibiscus/raspberry blend.
I was a little concerned about the amount of sugar in the recipe but didn’t reduce it for the cream/milk part. It is sweet but not overly so, really. I did, however, cut back on the sugar for the hibiscus/raspberry gelee. I used 3/4 cup rather than the 1 1/4 cup called for. That would have been overly sweet.
This is definitely a keeper recipe. It looks pretty and it tastes like more!
